Singapore's Bus System at a Glance

Singapore operates over 300 bus services across the island, serving every neighbourhood and connecting MRT stations with residential estates, industrial parks, hospitals and educational institutions. The Land Transport Authority (LTA) regulates all services under the Bus Contracting Model, where operators win contracts to run specific routes for fixed fees.

Three private operators currently run Singapore's bus services: SBST (SBS Transit), Tower Transit Singapore, and Go-Ahead Singapore. Despite operating under different brands, all buses use the same EZ-Link contactless fare system, making transfers seamless.

Types of Bus Services

Trunk Routes (100–999)

Standard services connecting residential areas to MRT stations, interchanges and town centres. These run throughout the day from as early as 5:00am to past midnight on most corridors. Frequency ranges from every 5 minutes during peak hours to every 15–20 minutes late at night.

Feeder Routes (800s)

Short-haul services running within housing estates, connecting HDB blocks to nearby MRT stations or bus interchanges. Fares are slightly lower than trunk routes, and journey times are typically under 15 minutes. Common in Punggol, Sengkang, Woodlands and Jurong West.

Express Services (e-prefix)

Limited-stop express buses operate during morning and evening peak hours on busy corridors. They skip intermediate stops to reduce travel time by 20–40%. Routes like e3, e6, e18 and e24 serve major employment clusters in the CBD, Jurong East and one-north.

Night Rider and Nite Owl

When the MRT shuts down after midnight, night bus services keep the island connected. NightRider (NR1–NR8) routes run from key interchanges like Jurong East, Woodlands, Tampines and Pasir Ris, running every 30 minutes until around 3:00am. Nite Owl services run in the early hours on selected high-demand corridors, including the CBD corridor.

Premium Bus Services

Premium services (with a 'P' prefix) are air-conditioned, reserved-seat buses with no standing passengers. They operate point-to-point between residential towns and the CBD. Fares are higher but comparable to a discounted taxi trip. Booking is done via the MyTransport app.

Bus stop timing boards: All bus stops with Electronic Bus Arrival display boards show the next two arrivals with crowding indicators (Standing, Limited Standing, Seats Available). The same data is accessible in real time via the MyTransport app.

How to Board and Pay

Buses in Singapore all board from the front. Tap your EZ-Link card on the green reader as you board. When exiting, tap out at the reader near the exit door. Failure to tap out results in a maximum fare deduction. Cash is technically accepted on some routes but strongly discouraged — there is no change given.

Fare Zones and Transfer Rebates

Like the MRT, bus fares are distance-based and calculated automatically using EZ-Link. Transferring between a bus and MRT (or bus to bus) within 45 minutes earns an integrated fare rebate, meaning you don't pay a full second boarding fee. This can save $0.10–$0.22 per transfer, which adds up significantly for daily commuters.

Journey Type Typical Fare (Adult) Notes
Feeder bus (short hop) $0.83 – $1.00 Within same estate
Trunk route (medium) $1.00 – $1.50 Town to MRT interchange
Express bus (CBD) $1.40 – $2.10 Peak hours only
Night Rider service $3.00 – $4.50 Fixed route pricing
Premium bus $3.00 – $5.00 Reserved seat, advance booking

Comparing Bus vs MRT for Common Routes

For routes running parallel to an MRT line, the train is almost always faster. But buses serve areas not on the MRT grid, and for short cross-town trips they can be quicker than going via interchange. From Tampines to Changi, Bus 29 is often faster than the EWL route via Tanah Merah. From Bedok to East Coast Park, buses are the only practical option.

Useful Bus Apps and Resources

Accessibility on Buses

All new buses deployed since 2015 are low-floor models with ramps for wheelchair access. Bus stops with heavy footfall feature tactile paving and audible signals. Wheelchair spaces are available near the front of the bus. Passengers requiring boarding assistance can contact SBS Transit or Tower Transit in advance for services running fixed routes.
